Indiana Dunes State Park

So, I’ve got a couple free weekends coming up, and after way too much time doomscrolling on my couch, I decided I’m finally going to check out Indiana Dunes National Park. It’s been on my hiking list for a while now—mainly because it’s close (about an hour from Chicago) and apparently way cooler than most people expect when they think of Indiana.

From what I’ve read, the park has a mix of dunes, forest, wetlands, and lake views. Basically, you can be hiking through shaded woods one minute and then suddenly be climbing up a massive sand dune the next. I’ve seen people describe it as “the Midwest’s version of the coast.” I’m not expecting Malibu or anything, but Lake Michigan does a decent impression of the ocean sometimes. The park also borders Indiana Dunes State Park, which has some steeper, more challenging hikes. I’m mainly sticking with the National Park side, though I might explore both if time allows.

Right now, I’m leaning toward starting at West Beach and doing the Dune Succession Trail, which is short but supposed to have great views of the lake. Then I’ll probably try to tackle Trail 10, maybe even loop in part of Trail 9 if I’m feeling ambitious. People say that combo gives you a little bit of everything: woods, dunes, and beach.

I’ve also been warned that hiking on sand is way harder than it looks, so I’m trying not to underestimate it. Definitely packing extra water and mentally preparing for sore legs the next day. I'm also planning to bring lunch and just hang out on the beach for a bit after the hike. Even if the water’s cold, being by the lake sounds way better than sitting inside all day.

If anyone’s reading this and has done Indiana Dunes recently, feel free to drop trail recs or tips. I’m all ears, especially when it comes to underrated spots or quiet areas to avoid the crowds.

  1. This is really interesting, this "state park" in the midwest almost looks like a beach, which is something I wouldn't really expect to see in the middle of the US. I was intrigued to see if every state had a state park, turns out that they don't because I had never heard of Illinois having one (there are parks run by the state, but they are not "state parks", per se). Also, side note, I don't think looking up hunting/vacation spots counts as doom scrolling! Sounds productive to me!
